When we returned to the hotel on Day 2, we found out that our Glacier Walk and Northern Lights tour (which was also part of our package) was cancelled because of the high winds. We were given the choice of a refund, a GC tour or a SuperJeep tour. We’d already done the GC, so SuperJeep it was. We went to the Vidgelmir Lava Caves
Hraunfossar (‘fossar’ is many waterfalls) & and Barnafoss (‘foss’ is a single waterfall)
and the hot spring at Deildartunguhver
We tried to get up to the Langjokull glacier, but mother nature had other ideas; sudden blizzard conditions with extremely high winds. So high that the driver’s window on the other vehicle was blown out! Both guides told us that it isn’t unusual to lose a window in those conditions, but usually it’s because of a rock or piece of lava in the wind. This was the first time they’d seen a window shattered simply by the force of the wind.
A lot of driving, but all in all a great day. Our guide was amazing and made the time in vehicle pass quickly by telling us a lot about Iceland and teaching us to speak Icelandic (well, he tried).
Dinner that night was at the Seabaron, we loved the food and the atmosphere. They have a case with skewers of fish, seafood and yes, whale. You pick what you want and they grill it and bring it to you. That and a bowl of the highly recommended lobster soup and you have a fabulous meal!
